Thermoplastic Labyrinth Seals for Centrifugal Compressors

چکیده

For over 15 years now, the efficiency and reliability of centrifugal compressors have been enhanced by the application of thermoplastic materials to the eye, shaft, and balance piston labyrinth seals. Traditionally these seals have been manufactured from metallic materials and have required relatively large clearances for reliability reasons. By upgrading to carefully selected engineered thermoplastics, the clearances can be reduced without sacrificing reliability. This results in increased compressor efficiency and the added benefit of easier installation. This tutorial will review the design and application of thermoplastic seals as used in centrifugal compressors. The tutorial will not cover in any detail abradable seals (such as babbitt or lead lined), reduced crosscoupling seals, or “other” seals (such as honeycomb, brush, carbon ring, dry gas, etc.).

Development of Abradable and Rub Tolerant Seal Materials for Application in Centrifugal Compressors and Steam Turbines

The use of abradable and rub tolerant polymer seals to reduce leakage between rotating and stationary members in centrifugal compressors and steam turbines has increased over the years. Abradable materials such as mica-filled tetrafluoroethylene (TFE), nickel graphite, and aluminum alloy containing silicon/polyester are the most commonly used and have gained acceptance in the marketplace. This ...

Dynamic Characterization of Fully Partitioned Damper Seals NEW PROPOSAL

Balance piston seals are subjected to large pressure differential and can generate large forces directly impacting the stability of centrifugal compressors. The most common designs are textured seals such as honeycomb, hole-pattern seals, and pocketed seals including pocket damper seals (PDS) and fully partition damper seals (FPDS), shown in Fig. 1. The dynamic performance of textured seals hav...
